PTEL has been inspired by student-driven trauma & emergency leagues in Latin America. The first trauma & emergency league began in Campinas, Brazil, at the university UNICAMP and has since spread to 70+ Brazilian cities, Ecuador in the city Cuenca, Peru, Chile, and more.
Although the structure and activities have been adapted to the University of Pittsburgh, fundamental goals are shared. The aim is to create a community that empowers students to invest themselves in their education and the improvement of their communities by creating new networks between universities, professionals, and communities.
The Panamerican Trauma Society, which has been headquartered in Pittsburgh from 2003-2010, represents a link between trauma & emergency leagues in the Americas, facilitating international interactions and promoting the concept of these leagues.
