This medical student-run workshop, a collaboration between the Addiction Medicine Interest Group at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and the Pittsburgh Poison Center, was aimed at training interested parties in recognizing and responding to an opioid overdose in the field using a Narcan (Naloxone) Overdose Reversal Kit. Specifically, the workshop addressed why Narcan is necessary in the context of the ongoing opioid problem, the mechanisms of overdose and its physical manifestations, the use of various Narcan-delivery devices, where and how Narcan can be obtained in the state of Pennsylvania and popular myths surrounding overdose and Narcan use. Student participants all had the opportunity to practice using Narcan delivery training devices. Students also received a live presentation from Pitt medical students trained by emergency medicine toxicologist, Dr. Michael Lynch, the medical director of the Pittsburgh Poison Center.
